What is the NEC?

Adopted in all 50 states, NFPA 70, National Electrical Code (NEC) is the benchmark for safe electrical design, installation, and inspection to protect people and property from electrical hazards.
The NEC (the National Fire Protection Association's NFPA 70) or “the codebook” is a widely adopted model code for the installation of electrical components and systems.
NEC’s purpose is to safeguard persons and property from hazards arising from the use of electricity.
Never allow anyone to do electrical work without proper training and schooling of the NEC. Your electrician should be knowledgeable and licensed in accord with the codebook.

Whose responsibilty is it?

The Power Company

The Power Company is responsible for the electrical wiring on all powerline poles and underground distribution boxes extending to the buildings meter. All meter sockets are isolated and tagged to prevent tampering in each service panel.
The Electrical Contractor

The Electrical Contractor is responsible for servicing anything after the first means of disconnect within the service panel. That includes all the breakers and the wiring thereafter going into the house or building.
The Homeowner

It is imperative that a client understands the difference between a homeowner and a tenant when asking for service. Electricians only do work that’s approved by the owner of a home or building.
The Tenant

If a tenant desires service from an electrician, they must contact the owner. The services will proceed only following arrangements made through the owner.

Why are Electrical Building Inspections essential?

A certified building inspector will carefully examine the home’s electrical systems to confirm that everything is currently up to code. These inspectors are usually employees of the local city or county and have the power to grant or deny electrical permits.
The purpose of these inspections is to confirm that new builds and existing construction are up to the current electrical code compliance. This ensures the building will remain safe for occupation.
If something is not up to code, they will require an electrical contractor to correct the issue before the inspection will “pass.” Usually, your electrical contractor will plan for these inspections.
Calling for a building electrical inspector will give you peace of mind if you’re building a home, and they can also inspect remodels and other additions whenever electricity is involved.

What’s AFCI and GFCI Protection?

WHAT IS AFCI?

An AFCI (Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter) device detects the arc faults in your wiring and shuts off the circuit. AFCI devices prevent any arcing that can result in a fire.
WHAT IS ARCING?

Arcing may occur initially, such as with an arc welder, or unintended, such as when a tree falls on a power line during a storm creating a current discharge between conductors or to the ground. An arc fault is an unintended arc created by current flowing through your wires.
WHAT IS GFCI?

A GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) is an automatic device that offers personal protection against lethal electrical shock or electrocution. It is a special electrical device that can stop electrical power within milliseconds as a safety precaution.
WHAT DOES GFCI DO?

It trips electrical circuits whenever it detects ground faults or leakage currents. So, when a person’s body starts to receive a shock, the GFCI senses this and cuts off the power before he or she can get injured. These are essential in areas susceptible to moisture.
